Kobe and Vanessa Bryant Begin Dividing Assets in Divorce

Kobe Bryant’s divorce from his wife Vanessa is not yet finalized, but the wheels are in motion.

Vanessa Bryant filed for divorce in December. The reason for the split was listed as “irreconcilable differences.” The two have apparently avoided a court battle by resolving their dispute privately.

The couple has begun to distribute their assets. Last week, three mansions in the Newport Beach area were listed in Vanessa’s name. The mansions are valued at $18.8 million.

Kobe’s net worth is estimated at roughly $150 million. Although the couple did not sign a pre-nuptial agreement, Vanessa will likely receive half or more of that.

“In addition to her property settlement, Vanessa Bryant will be receiving spousal maintenance and child support,” says Divorce Attorney, Katie Lammers. “In Minnesota, child support is determined using an income shares method, which involves taking the income of both parties, the amount paid for medical and dental insurance, the amount paid for daycare and the parenting time awarded to each party and entering that information into a calculator which returns values for basic support, medical support, and child care support.”

In Minnesota, there is a $15,000 income cap on parental income for child support. If the income for child support exceeds $15,000 per month, a party can petition the court for an upward deviation of support if certain statutory factors are met.

“It’s more difficult to calculate spousal maintenance since there isn’t a formula upon which the courts can rely,” says Katie. “The courts must first determine whether a spouse has a need for a maintenance award, taking into account the standard of living established during the marriage. If the spouse has a need, the court must look at whether the other spouse has the ability to pay maintenance. If so, the court will look at the amount and the duration of the maintenance award. In Minnesota, spousal maintenance awards can be permanent or temporary.”
